Shipping between China and Bangladesh reaches new speeds

Direct service will cut the time needed for deliveries in half

The MV Thor Spirit, a container ship, arrived at Chattogram port in just 9 days, marking the start of a new direct shipping service between China and Bangladesh. The ship carries 1,190 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). The new service is expected to significantly reduce the time needed for deliveries between the two countries. Previously, goods shipped from China to Bangladesh had to transit through Singapore or Colombo, which added 10-12 days to the delivery time.

Faster and cheaper

Chattogram port handled 3.3 million TEUs in the last fiscal year, of which 2.6 million TEUs were handled at the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT). The new direct shipping service is expected to increase the volume of cargo handled at NCT by 20%. The direct shipping service is part of Bangladesh's efforts to boost trade with China. Bilateral trade between the two countries has been growing steadily in recent years, and is expected to reach $20 billion this year.
