New Vending Machines in Allegheny County Dispense Life-Saving Drug
Free Narcan Available at Seven Locations
Allegheny County Health Department Combats Opioid Epidemic
The Allegheny County Health Department has installed seven vending machines throughout the county that dispense free Narcan, a drug that reverses the effects of an opioid overdose. The machines are located at:
- Allegheny County Airport
- Allegheny County Jail
- Carnegie Mellon University
- Northside Common Ministries
- Pittsburgh Public Safety Building
- UPMC Mercy
- West Penn Hospital
The county health department is making Narcan accessible for free in an effort to combat the opioid epidemic. In 2023, there were over 1,200 opioid-related deaths in Allegheny County.
Narcan is a safe and effective way to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. It works by blocking the effects of opioids on the brain, allowing the person to breathe again. Narcan is available over-the-counter at pharmacies without a prescription.
The Allegheny County Health Department urges anyone who knows someone who is at risk for an opioid overdose to get Narcan. The vending machines are a convenient way to get Narcan for free, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
